Dust storm cleanup for Sharjah villas: what to do, in what order
A strong shamal can coat a villa in fine sand in a few hours. The instinct is to grab a cloth and start wiping. That is usually the most expensive mistake of the day, because dry grit scratches glass and paint. Here is a calmer order of work for the outside of the house.
First rule: wait for the wind to drop
Cleaning during a dust event just means cleaning twice. Wait until the wind has properly settled and visibility is back to normal, often a day later. Do not climb ladders or go onto roofs and terraces while gusts are still strong. If anyone in the house has asthma, keep windows closed and let someone else handle the outdoor work.
While you wait, look around and make a short list: broken branches, anything blown into the pool, sand piled against doors, and whether the AC is still running normally.
The first 24 hours
Pool: skim and protect the pump
If you have a private pool, this is the priority. Skim leaves and debris off the surface, empty the skimmer baskets and the pump basket, and keep the pump running so the filter can catch suspended sand. Sand that settles on the floor needs vacuuming once the water clears. A sudden load of fine dust also uses up chlorine, so test the water the same day rather than at the next scheduled visit. Check the filter pressure gauge: if it has climbed well above its normal reading, the filter needs a backwash or a clean.
Garden: rinse, then check the drippers
A coat of dust on leaves blocks light and adds stress, especially in the heat. An early-morning rinse with a gentle spray helps. More important is the irrigation: sand gets into dripper heads and small filters and quietly blocks them. Run each zone and look for dry spots or heads that are no longer spraying. Clear fallen fronds and branches from lawns before they smother the grass.
The next two or three days
Exterior glass: rinse before you wipe
This is where most damage happens. Sand is abrasive, and wiping dusty glass with a dry cloth or a dry squeegee drags grit across the pane. Always loosen and rinse the dust off with plenty of water first, then clean. The same goes for glass doors and balcony panels. Frames, sills and sliding door tracks collect a surprising amount of sand; vacuum the tracks before you open and close the doors too often, or the rollers will grind.
Upper floors are a job for a two-person team with proper ladders and harnesses, not a solo effort on a wet ladder. If your villa is on a monthly window plan, ask for the visit to be brought forward rather than waiting out the month with dull glass.
Cars: the same rule as glass
Never dry-wipe a dusty car. A rinse first, then a proper wash, keeps the paint free of the fine swirl marks that a quick wipe leaves behind. If your car wash is done in the driveway, the team should rinse thoroughly before any mitt touches the bodywork.
AC: filters first, coils to a technician
Indoor return-air filters catch a lot of dust during a storm. Check them and change or clean them if they look grey, because a clogged filter makes the system work harder in exactly the season it is needed most. Outdoor condenser units may also be dusty. Leave the fins to an AC technician: pressure washing them yourself can bend fins and push dirt deeper.
On 360 plans, the outdoor half of the cleanup will already be on the schedule: garden, pool, exterior windows and driveway car wash, done by the same team, with photos of every visit.

Within the week
- Drains: clear roof, terrace and balcony drains so the next rain does not pool against the walls.
- Outdoor furniture and cushions: shake out and rinse; fine dust holds moisture and stains fabric.
- Door seals and thresholds: brush out sand so doors close cleanly and insects have fewer gaps to use.
- Trees: have damaged or hanging branches cut back cleanly before they fall on a car or a wall.
- Pool again: retest chemistry a few days later, once the filter has caught up.
What not to do
- Do not wipe glass, mirrors or car paint while they are still dusty and dry.
- Do not pressure wash AC fins, painted walls or wooden decking at close range.
- Do not let the pool pump run dry because the baskets are full of debris.
- Do not hose sand into floor drains in large amounts; sweep and bag it.
Planning for the next one
Dusty spells are part of life here, especially in the warmer months. The villas that recover fastest are the ones already on a rhythm: irrigation checked every week, filters on a quarterly schedule, exterior glass on a monthly slot. That way a storm is an extra pass, not a weekend lost. Our month-by-month maintenance plan for Sharjah villas shows how those routines fit together through the year.

FAQ
How long should I wait before cleaning my villa after a dust storm?
Wait until the wind has fully dropped and the air has cleared, often the following day. Cleaning during the storm only means doing it twice, and ladders are unsafe in gusts.
Can I wipe sand off my windows with a dry cloth?
No. Dry sand is abrasive and can scratch glass. Rinse the dust off with plenty of water first, then clean. The same applies to car paint and glass doors.
What happens to a pool after a sandstorm?
Fine sand clouds the water, settles on the floor and uses up chlorine. Skim, empty the baskets, keep the pump running, test the water the same day and backwash or clean the filter if the pressure has risen.
Should I clean my AC after a dust storm?
Check and change or clean the indoor filters. Leave outdoor condenser coils to an AC technician rather than pressure washing them yourself.
